Description
The prostate gland is a single doughnut shaped gland that lies beneath the bladder and surrounds the urethra. An enlarged prostate gland can restrict the flow of urine and cause symptoms such as bladder obstruction, increased urinary frequency, nighttime awakening to empty the bladder and reduced force of urine flow.
Causes of an enlarged prostate are usually linked to hormonal changes associated with aging. Levels of the male sex hormone testosterone decrease with age, but estrogen and prolactin levels are increased. The end result of all these changes is that there is an increase in testosterone levels in the prostate, as well as an increase in the conversion of testosterone into its more potent form, dihidrotestosterone (DHT). It is the DHT which is implicated in the enlargement of the prostate gland.
Treatment options are aimed at reducing the levels of DHT and alleviation of symptoms.
Saw palmetto, pygeum and nettle inhibit the formation of DHT; Vitamin C, vitamin E and lycopene are powerful anti-oxidants that protect against prostate cancer, while the other nutrients play a supportive role and have a synergistic effect.
