Description
Eczema is a common skin condition characterized by a chronic, itchy, inflamed skin and is usually triggered by an allergic reaction. Certain physiological and anatomical abnormalities related to the immune system also seem to be typical of persons prone to eczema. Mast cells from the skin of such patients release higher amounts of histamine than people without eczema.
Another defect of the immune system involves the inability of the alternate complement pathway to destroy bacteria and foreign particles, which can lead to a greater susceptibility to bacterial infections of the skin. Patients with eczema also appear to have altered fatty acid and prostaglandin metabolism.
Treatment strategies are aimed at identifying and eliminating the responsible allergens, the inhibition of excess histamine release and the alleviation of symptoms.
Quercetin, grapeseed and vitamin C reduce the amount of histamine in circulation; GLA is converted to prostaglandins which have an anti-inflammatory action; inulin, glucan and vitamin C activate the immune system. Other nutrients have synergistic effects
