Description
Angina is caused by an insufficient supply of blood, and hence oxygen, to the heart muscle, which can produce a feeling of discomfort or a pressure-like pain in the chest. The pain may radiate to the left shoulder blade, left arm or jaw and usually recedes after one to twenty minutes.
Angina may be caused by spasms of the coronary arteries (the blood vessels that supply heart tissue with blood) but is usually as a result of blockage of these arteries due to the buildup of cholesterol-containing plaque (atherosclerosis). Angina is a serious condition that usually precedes a heart attack and needs careful treatment and monitoring.
Treatment involves improving energy metabolism in the heart muscle as well as increasing the blood supply to the heart.
