Description
A muscle cramp is an involuntarily and forcible contraction of a muscle that can last from a few seconds to a quarter of an hour or even longer. Muscle cramps often cause a visible or palpable hardening of the involved muscle and can be extremely unpleasant or painful. Cramps of the extremities, especially the legs and feet, and most particularly the calf, are very common.
Cramping can have a number of causes such as injury, vigorous activity and dehydration, but the most likely cause is the loss of body electrolytes (calcium, magnesium, sodium, potassium). Low blood levels of either calcium or magnesium increase the excitability of the nerve endings that stimulate muscles, as well as the muscles themselves, and may be a predisposing factor for cramps.
Cramping occurs in any situation that decreases the levels of calcium or magnesium in the blood, such as taking diuretics, excessive vomiting, inadequate calcium and/or magnesium in the diet, poor function of the parathyroid glands (involved in calcium balance), and other conditions. Low levels of potassium may also cause muscle cramps, although it is more common for low potassium to be associated with muscle weakness than cramping.
Treatment is aimed at replenishing the deficient nutrients.
