Description
Atherosclerosis is the process of hardening and blocking of the arteries due to changes in the artery wall. Lesions in the artery wall, possibly due to nutrient shortages, form a focal point for the adhesion of lipoproteins and cholesterol circulating in the blood and eventually leads to the formation of a plaque.
White blood cells and platelets also adhere to the damaged area and release growth factors that stimulate growth of the muscle cells into the lumen of the artery, further contributing to the blockage.
Treatment involves preventing the formation of the initial lesion, inhibiting the binding of lipoproteins and facilitating the breakdown of the plaque
Vitamin C helps to maintain the integrity of the collagen layer surrounding the artery and thereby prevents and repairs the lesions that are formed (one of the symptoms of scurvy was the haemorrhaging and bruising of the skin which was reversed by vitamin C); lysine and proline prevent the adhesion of lipoproteins to the plaque, while the fibrolytic activity of bromelain facilitates their breakdown. Other nutrients have a supportive role.
