Description
The liver is a complex organ that plays a key role in most metabolic processes, especially that of detoxification. The liver is constantly exposed to toxic substances, not only those produced by internal metabolic processes, but also those that occur in the environment.
Normal metabolism produces a wide range of toxins for which the liver has developed efficient neutralizing mechanisms, but these processes often go astray, typically as a result of nutritional deficiencies. However, most of the toxic chemicals the liver must detoxify come from our environment, such as cigarette smoke, the pesticides and herbicides used to spray our crops and pollution (dioxin, PCB etc). Up to 90% of all cancers are thought to be due to the effects of these environmental toxins and the proper functioning of the liver’s detoxification system is therefore crucial to our well being.
Milk thistle and lipoic acid are powerful anti-oxidants that can prevent liver damage directly, and also by preventing the depletion of glutathione, the major detoxification compound in the liver. Other ingredients function as lipotropic agents which improve liver function and fat metabolism.
