Description
Diabetes is a chronic disorder of carbohydrate metabolism characterized by high fasting levels of blood sugar (glucose). Diabetes occurs when the beta-cells of the pancreas do not secrete enough insulin (Type I diabetes) or when the cells of the body become resistant to insulin and cannot absorb the glucose present in the blood (Type II diabetes). Classic symptoms of diabetes, both Type I and Type II, are frequent urination, excessive thirst and excessive appetite.
Type I, or Insulin Dependant Diabetes, usually has a genetic cause and is associated with the destruction of the beta-cells in the pancreas which produce insulin. Insulin Dependant diabetics need to take insulin every day throughout their lives. Type II or Non Insulin Dependant Diabetes still have functional beta-cells and can regulate their insulin levels by strict attention to their diet, although drugs and insulin may be used for additional support.
Environmental factors seem to play a role in Type II diabetics, notably a diet high in refined, fibre-depleted carbohydrates typical of modern lifestyles; Type II accounts for approximately 90% of all diabetics. Treatment of diabetes involves nutrients that have been shown to improve blood sugar control and to reduce insulin resistance.
