Description
Acne is caused by the blockages of skin pores and is most common among males, especially at the onset of puberty. Testosterone stimulates the cells that line the follicular canal (canal through which the hair shaft passes) to produce more keratin which block the skin pore. In addition, testosterone causes the sebaceous glands associated with the hair follicle to produce more sebum, which further contributes to the blockage of the skin pore. Girls also experience an increase in testosterone levels during puberty, which makes them susceptible as well.
Elevated levels of testosterone do not necessary cause acne in all adolescence, which implies that other mechanisms may be involved as well. It appears that the skin of patients with acne shows greater activity of an enzyme called 5-alpha reductase which converts testosterone to dihydrotestosterone, a more potent form and it is this compound that is responsible for acne.
Treatment strategies involve controlling the levels of dihydrotestosterone and treating the symptoms.
In the formula saw palmetto inhibits the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone; vitamin A, vitamin E and zinc reduce sebum production and buildup of keratin. Other nutrients have a supportive function.
