Description
Varicose veins occur when defects in the wall of a vein lead to dilation and subsequent pooling of blood, resulting in bulging and protruding veins. Several theories exist to explain the weakness of the vein walls such as long standing, excessive straining during defecation, heavy lifting, and damage due to inflammation and excessive release of enzymes that destroy the integrity of the vein.
Treatment is aimed at restoring vein function and relieving the symptoms.
Horse chestnut, butchers broom and centella exert anti-edema, anti-inflammatory and vasoconstrictor properties, inhibit the enzymes that break down the support structure of the vein and enhance connective tissue integrity; bromelain has fibrinolytic activity and may help to prevent development of the hard lumpy skin found around varicosed veins; vitamin C and grapeseed strengthen the collagen sheath surrounding veins. Other nutrients have a synergistic role.
