Description
Migraine headaches are caused by excessive dilation of blood vessels in the head, and includes symptoms such as severe headaches, blurring of vision, anxiety, fatigue, disturbed thinking and numbness or tingling. The headache pain is not associated with the brain itself but arises from the blood vessels that supply the lining of the brain and scalp; migraine patients seem to have an inherited abnormality in their control of blood vessel dilation and constriction, which in turn seems related to an abnormal platelet metabolism.
Platelets are the small blood cells involved in blood clotting and also the storage reservoirs of serotonin found in the blood. In migraine patients there is a significant increase in the spontaneous clumping together of platelets which leads to a release of serotonin; it is the serotonin that plays a role in the state or relaxation or constriction of blood vessels.
Food allergies and intolerances may also be the cause of migraine headaches. Certain foods such as chocolate, cheese, beer and wine contain histamine or other compounds that can trigger migraine headaches by causing blood vessels to dilate.
Treatment involves preventing spontaneous clumping and allergic reactions, and easing pain and inflammation.
Butterbur, feverfew and magnesium normalise the dilation of the blood vessels and prevent clumping of the platelets; vitamin C, quercetin and grapeseed are involved in histamine metabolism, stabilising cell membranes and inhibiting histamine release from mast cells; willow bark and feverfew also have anti-inflammatory effects which can lead to a direct reduction in symptoms.
